Prizes, contacts and new ideas for Calgary Zoo at the World Conservation Congress

Clément Lanthier, President of Calgary Zoo in Canada, describes his first three days at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona as “fantastic.” Not only has the zoo received a UNDP prize for its pioneering project combining conservation with community support at Ghana’s Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary but he has made innumerable contacts.

A chance meeting with Nalini Nadkarna, a specialist in unusual conservation outreach projects, introduced him to her initiative for encouraging people in jail to cultivate moss to replace unsustainable harvesting in ancient forests in Washington State, USA. Dr Lanthier was so impressed by her idea that he is now considering doing the same with the endangered Northern Leopard Frog in his native Canada.
