CEC initiates efforts to engage in collaboration that encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences, mutual learning, and meaningful action across generations, geographies and genders in support of IUCN's mission of biodiversity conservation.

This effort has a special focus on increasing the number and engagement of young people on the CEC and other Commissions. Young professional groups are operating within three Commissions (see links at right). CEC catalyzed efforts to have the first-ever young person appointed to the Council, a young woman from Kenya. Efforts are underway to support the development of young professionals groups on the remaining Commissions and promote intergenerational partnership initiatives during the International Year of Forests and leading up to the World Conservation Congress in 2012
