Social Science and Ecosystems Programme Officer
As Social Science and Ecosystems Programme Officer, Kaia works under both the Ecosystem Management Programme and the Social Policy Unit at IUCN Headquarters. In this role, she engages in the development of IUCN’s new knowledge products: the Natural Resource Governance Framework; the Human Dependency on Nature Framework; and the Red List of Ecosystems.
Kaia came to IUCN in March 2010 in the Social Policy Unit supporting IUCN’s work on indigenous peoples’ rights, governance of natural resources and food security and then moved to the Ecosystem Management Programme to work on disaster risk reduction. With the 2013-2016 Programme came her new role of supporting Red List of Ecosystems development and CEESP-Secretariat engagement.
Her background is in Anthropology and Environmental Studies (BA’s, Tufts University) and she has a MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management (University of Oxford). Kaia is Norwegian, Swiss and British by nationality but she has lived on 4 continents and among her field research experiences are documenting and analyzing human-elephant interactions in East Africa and fire management in South Africa.
