CEPA events showcase 'bright spots' in conservation social marketing at CBD COP 11 in Hyderabad

CEC members David Ainsworth and Brian Day will lead side events featuring success stories in the use of Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) tools and methods. Workshops are presented by Rare and the Global Island Partnership.

CEC members are participating in the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP11). CBD COP11 will be held in Hyderabad, India, from 8 – 19 October 2012.

Highlighting Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) bright spots around the world

For too long conservationists have focused on problems—overfishing, deforestation, species extinction, climate change. But naming the problem is very different than sourcing the solution. Rare finds what works and uses its Pride methodology, a combination of communication, education and behavior change science, and scales community-led innovations.

This event will raise awareness of innovative CEPA (Communication, Education and Public Awareness) programming taking place around the world and promote and advance successes of local leaders using CEPA to achieve conservation results in their communities. David Ainsworth from the Convention on Biological Diversity will highlight the importance of CEPA for the CBD, and other global experts and Rare alumni will present CEPA tools and methodologies which they have successfully deployed on the ground.

CEPA is Pride: Using the powers of social marketing to change behavior and achieve the Aichi Targets
Wednesday, 17 October, 18:00 – 22:00 (Dinner and Drinks provided), HICC (CEPA Fair venue)
Led by Rare’s Social Marketing Director Brian Day

This dynamic social marketing workshop will encourage interest and increase knowledge about the role of a targeted communications strategy to achieve impact. This session draws from the best of Rare’s 200+ campaigns in 50+ countries to inspire COP 11 delegates and guests to more effectively use CEPA to achieve measurable conservation results.

Island Innovations: Celebrating Bright Spots, Leadership and Successes in Island Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods
Tuesday, 16 October

Island Innovations will be held across two interlinked events:

  • Island Bright Spots: Exchanging innovations and successes (Registration and Coffee from 09.30 to 10.00, event from 10.00 to 13.00), Contact Group VII - Level I - Room 1.03/1.04. Open participation. Coordinators: GLISPA (Global Island Partnership), Rare

Island success is built upon initiatives that work – bright spots. To continue to advance we need to build on what is working and upon those bright spots which have the potential to be scaled and replicated. This event will focus on a selection of island bright spots that are advancing ecosystem based adaptation, food security, new and innovative financial mechanisms, green and blue economies, and/or reducing the threat of invasive species. Participatory facilitation techniques will be used to determine how these bright spots can be brought to scale.

  • Island Life: Celebrating leadership and commitment to action (19.30 to 23.00) This invitation only event will focus on celebrating leadership related to the CBD programme of work on island biodiversity and will include significant announcements made by island Parties, Parties with islands and island supporters.
