A round-up of articles and papers likely to be of interest to the SULi community

- IUCN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) programme: http://www.iucn.org/about/work/programmes/ecosystem_management/ipbes
- Naturalliance: An alliance of organisations, including IUCN through SULi, has started the long task of integrating and providing encouragement, knowledge and management tools in one place on the internet for managing livelihoods and biodiversity sustainably. The integrated complex knowledge can be combined with local knowledge, to create adaptive governance and align policy for sustainability with the myriad decisions made daily at local level that gradually change the environment. A portal has been launched, in 21 languages, to provide examples of best practice in conserving through use, tools for mapping and links to other services. http://www.naturalliance.eu
- PNAS paper confirms importance of Learning by Doing: The Addis Ababa and Malawi Principles assume that adaptive management at the local level is important for conservation, but this had never been shown quantitatively. A paper involving members of SSC, CEESP and the European Regional Office, was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. It showed that the two most important conditions for successful conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use were adaptive management, in terms of monitoring results and managing accordingly, and knowledge leadership, in terms of referring regularly to a source of expertise at higher level. http://www.anatrack.com/Adaptive_Management_(PNAS)_2011-108.pdf
- Rio dialogues: http://www.riodialogues.org
- The Poverty and Conservation Learning Group is an international network of organisations and individuals interested in the links between biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. Coordinated by IIED, the network acts as a channel for information collection, synthesis and dissemination. Occasional meetings, research activities and other events are also organized. A monthly newsletter summarises news from members, details of relevant publications, events, and grant opportunities: http://www.povertyandconservation.info
- TRAFFIC: Illegal hunting in Mozambique undermines food security and wildlife-based land uses, a new TRAFFIC study reports: http://www.traffic.org/home/2012/5/9/illegal-hunting-undermining-food-security-and-wildlife-based.html
- TRAFFIC: Medicinal plants: http://www.traffic.org/home/2012/4/9/traffic-launches-sustainable-wild-harvested-medicinal-plant.html
- A Transactional System for Environmental Support: Scientists have easy access on the web to tools for adaptive management and sources of environmental knowledge, including predictive models to forecast some likely results of land management. However, less than 5% of these models are suitable for use by local managers of land and species. The European network of SULi received EU funding to design a system that collects local knowledge to guide central policy-making. http://www.tess-project.eu
