His current responsibilities include: global policy development for IUCN in the field of protected areas; support to the protected areas field programme of IUCN; servicing the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the world`s largest network of professionals working in the field of protected areas; and coordinating IUCN`s role in relation to the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

Participation in international Committees and Boards include: serving as Head of the IUCN delegation to the World Heritage Committee; serving as Chairman of the Advisory Board for "PARKS" - the International Journal for Protected Area Managers"; representing IUCN on the International Co-ordinating Council of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the Global Judging Panel of the British Airways "Tourism for Tomorrow" Award. From 2000, David Sheppard has been invited to be listed on the International Who`s Who of Professionals.

Pedro Rosabal

Senior Programme Officer, IUCN Protected Areas Programme

Pedro Rosabal's work in IUCN includes preparing technical documents and assessments on protected areas issues, support and networking with the World Commission on Protected Areas, project coordination and management, project development and negotiation, as well as technical and policy input to the CBD process and the UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention, including the evaluation of WH nominations and undertaking monitoring missions to WH properties.

His regional experience in IUCN covers Latin America and the Caribbean, North Africa and the Middle East, North Eurasia and the Pacific. He is member of the IUCN/World Heritage Panel and the International Council of Experts of the Institute for Responsible Tourism. He also contributes regularly to master courses on protected areas issues organized by the University of Almeria, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the International University Menéndez Pelayo.

Joanna Erfani, Finance Assistant, IUCN Programme on Protected Areas

Joanna Erfani

Financial Assistant

Joanna is Financial Assistant to the Programme on Protected Areas. In this capacity she administers the project portfolio, draws up contracts, issues invoices, assists with donor reporting and charges staff time.

She also keeps a close eye on the Programme’s finances and assists in end-of-year closing. Joanna also has responsibility for the distribution and reporting of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Commission Operation Fund, an annual grant to the WCPA Commission Chair

Anne Erb

Administrative Assistant IUCN Programme on Protected Areas

Anne is the Administrative Assistant for the Programme on Protected Areas which she joined in January 2004.

Anne also deals with all the WCPA membership issues

Delwyn Dupuis

Membership and Communications Assistant

Delwyn Dupuis is an assistant of the Protected Areas Programme since 2002.

Her main tasks are managing and developing the ever-growing WCPA website, administering discussion forums, managing the PALNet website, managing and communicating with the WCPA membership, desiging and desktopping some of the programmes publications.

She also does the logistics and communications with participants in all the major meetings of the Protected Area Programme.

Djinn Pourkiani, IUCN Protected Areas Programme Communications Officer

Communications Officer

Djinn joined us in February 2008 as Communications Officer. Her main responsibilities will be preparing for all the communications activities for the IUCN World Conservation Congress as well as the Durban Review Meeting in Cape Town.

Tim Badman

Special Advisor, World Heriage

Tim Badman joined IUCN as Special Adviser, World Heritage in August 2007. He was previously based in Dorset County Council (UK) as Environment Policy Manager. Between 2000-2006 he was the team leader of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site, a role which included the supervision of the nomination process which culminated in inscription on the World Heritage List in 2001, and the subsequent development of the World Heritage programme for this site.

Bastian Bomhard, World Heritage Officer

Bastian Bomhard

World Heritage Officer

Bastian has a vital function in coordinating the implementation of IUCN’s role under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. His tasks include coordinating the IUCN evaluation of new natural and mixed nominations for the World Heritage List, including the implementation of evaluation missions, and IUCN / WCPA participation in World Heritage meetings. For this he maintains close cooperation especially with UNESCO, UNEP-WCMC, IUCN’s RCOs and IUCN WCPA.

Josephine Langley

World Heritage Monitoring Officer

Josephine Langley joined IUCN’s Programme on Protected Areas as the World Heritage Monitoring Officer in January 2007. She works with IUCN WCPA and UNESCO World Heritage Centre to monitor natural World Heritage sites.

Annelie Fincke, World Heritage Intern

Annelie Fincke

World Heritage Intern

Annelie Fincke joined the Programme on Protected Areas as a World Heritage intern in October 2007. She is supporting the team`s work on monitoring World Heritage sites, evaluating new World Heritage nominations, and other World Heritage related areas of concern such as tourism and communities.

Her internship is funded by the Carlo Schmid Programme, which is jointly run by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.
