Guarding Our Ocean Wildlife

A lot of us value more than just a coastal view, we love the sea itself. But the sea that we know and love is changing. Once treated as a dumping ground and considered inexhaustible, our oceans are now in crisis and need our help. The Australian Marine Conservation Society is Australia's only charity dedicated exclusively to protecting ocean wildlife and their homes.

Australia's Biosphere Reserves

A biosphere reserve is a unique concept which includes one or more protected areas and surrounding lands that are managed to combine both conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Each biosphere reserve conserves examples of characteristic ecosystems of one of the world's natural regions, managed for their protection and study.
  • It is a land and/or coastal/marine area in which people are an integral component, and which is managed for objectives ranging from complete protection to intensive yet sustainable production.
  • It is a regional centre for monitoring, research, education and training on natural and managed ecosystems.
  • It is a place where government decision makers, scientists, managers and local people cooperate in developing a model program for managing land and water to meet human needs while conserving natural processes and biological resources.
  • Finally, each biosphere reserve is a symbol of voluntary cooperation to conserve and use resources for the well being of people everywhere.

Government of Australia Indigenous Protected Areas Programme

Indigenous Protected Areas deliver more than environmental benefits. Managing Indigenous Protected Areas helps Indigenous communities to protect their significant cultural values for future generations and receive spin-off health, education, economic and social benefits. The Australian Government's Caring for our Country initiative plans to increase Indigenous Protected Areas by at least 40 per cent over the next five years - an increase of at least eight million hectares.

Forest and Bird Society

Formed in 1923, Forest & Bird has about 40,000 members in 50 branches that work on a variety of conservation activities, from re-forestation to lobbying, bird monitoring to weed-busting.

Originally established to protect our native forests and birds, our role has been extended in recent years to include protection of all native species and wild places – on land and in our oceans, lakes and rivers.

Although the issues Forest & Bird has tackled have broadened over time, the same motivation - to protect New Zealand's native flora, fauna, habitats and natural scenic values – is still central to Forest & Bird today.
