Global Review of the World Heritage Network

The aim of the World Heritage Convention is to ensure the protection for all time of the world’snatural and cultural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value. In 1994, to assist in meeting this aim,the World Heritage Committee adopted a Global Strategy for achieving a balanced, representative and credible World Heritage List that reflects the world’s diverse heritage. Over the past 10 years anumber of studies and consultations have been carried out to develop and refine the GlobalStrategy. This review is an important addition to that process, focusing on the inter-related elements of biogeography, habitats and biological diversity that underpin much of what we consider ‘natural heritage’.

This report presents an initial analysis of the role of natural World Heritage Sites within the global protected areas “estate”. It is primarily based on protected area data included in the UNEP-IUCN World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). The WDPA is a joint product of UNEP and IUCN, managed by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) working with governments and collaborating NGOs www.wdpa.org. It also refers to some current figures held by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre on the areas of natural World Heritage Sites.

A global review of karst World Heritage properties: present situation, future prospects and management requirements

This report was commissioned by IUCN’s Programme on Protected Areas and financed by the World Heritage Fund in response to a request from the World Heritage Committee (27) was carried out and consultation with regional experts and members of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) to identify a limited number of sites which may have potential for natural World Heritage status from among almost three hundred protected areas in Central Asia.

This report discusses role of the World Heritage Convention in recognizing and protecting geological and geomorphological heritage, and presents proposals based on a global consultation
The World Heritage Convention is capable of recognizing geological and geomorphological values either directly or indirectly. The supportive Convention is also capable of recognizing the value of geological and geomorphological values, underpinning biological, cultural and landscape diversity. The ways in which this might be achieved need further discussion. Direct recognition of such values comes through inscription of properties on the World Heritage List under criterion viii (formerly natural criterion i) either on its own or in combination with other natural or cultural criteria.

World Heritage Resource Manuals

This Resource Manual, developed with the support of the World Heritage Fund, is an input from IUCN to the implementation of the Global Strategy of the World Heritage Committee. In particular it seeks to support States Parties in implementing the World Heritage Convention and to provide guidance and knowledge that will help ensure a credible World Heritage List of well managed natural and mixed properties universal value. As requested by the World Heritage Committee and States Parties, this Manual is an attempt to support States Parties at any early stage of the evaluation process – “upstream” of the point at which a nomination is submitted for formal evaluation. As the body evaluating natural and mixed nominations, IUCN cannot advise on or support the preparation of specific nominations; however it is hoped that this Manual will help States Parties to carefully consider the mplications of proceeding with World Heritage nominations and the necessary steps to ensure the effort is worthwhile for both the conservation of the property and the well-being of local communities and other local stakeholders.

IUCN Programme on Protected Areas 2007
The purpose of this Manual is to help those responsible for managing World Heritage sites, understand how to do this, by suggesting what they need to think about when producing a Management Plan for their property. What this Manual does not recommend however is a single blue print for the preparation of a World Heritage site Management Plan, nor does it set out rules or provide solutions to individual management problems. What makes it different however is that it builds upon the guidance which already exists about preparing Management Plans, by focusing on those specific issues taken into account within World Heritage properties. The Manual should therefore be used as a Tool Kit to help answer the question What makes a successful Management Plan
