Organic Shrimp Farming in Ca Mau: a new film

With funding from International Climate Initiative (ICI), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, IUCN and SNV are working in Ca Mau with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Nhung Mien Forest Management Board, and Minh Phu, one of the world’s largest seafood exporters, to support farmer participation in a certified organic shrimp program that links a 10% price premium to the maintenance of 50% mangrove cover in each farm. It’s a form of international PES, with shrimp farmers as the sellers and consumers in US, EU, and Japan as the buyers of the environmental services that a healthy mangrove forest provides. Over 700 farmers are currently enrolled and we hope to enroll another 600 this year. To see a short video and a trailer of the project, click below.   …   | Vietnamese

Vietnam: The Ha Long Bay Alliance

Steep limestone pillars rising sharply out of the emerald green waters of Ha Long Bay – the image is synonymous with Vietnam. Every year, thousands of tourists visit this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site to experience its majestic beauty. The weight of these visitors combined with rapid regional industrialization, however, is straining the bay’s environmental health. In response, the U.S. government, in partnership with the provincial (Quang Ninh) People’s Committee, has recently launched the Ha Long Bay Alliance. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the alliance aims to improve environmental management and foster stronger cooperation and communication among stakeholders. …
