Different stakeholders at the launch

Vietnam: The Ha Long Bay Alliance

Steep limestone pillars rising sharply out of the emerald green waters of Ha Long Bay – the image is synonymous with Vietnam. Every year, thousands of tourists visit this UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site to experience its majestic beauty. The weight of these visitors combined with rapid regional industrialization, however, is straining the bay’s environmental health. In response, the U.S. government, in partnership with the provincial (Quang Ninh) People’s Committee, has recently launched the Ha Long Bay Alliance. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the alliance aims to improve environmental management and foster stronger cooperation and communication among stakeholders. …

Journalist training: a case of ADD?

We all know kids who can’t sit still, who never seem to listen, who don’t follow instructions no matter how clearly you present them, or who blurt out inappropriate comments at inappropriate times. Shrimp mangrove polyculture in Bac Lieu Province

Shrimp farming: a case study from Bac Lieu

In Vietnam, shrimp farming is a multi-billion dollar a year export business. But the term encompasses a wide range of farming practices from highly intensive to semi-natural. As sea levels rise and storms intensify, there is an argument that coastal areas in the Mekong Delta should move to a more natural state in which integrated mangrove-shrimp farming is the dominant land use. But that means addressing the polluted water that intensive farms often discharge into integrated mangrove farms. These two farming systems exist side by side. On a recent visit to Bac Lieu, we interviewed integrated mangrove farmers about their business model and the environmental impacts of the nearby intensive farms. To read an article about what we learned, please go to project website "Management of Natural Resources in the Coastal Zone of Soc Trang Province". …
