Over the last 30 years Viet Nam’s socio-economic development has relied heavily on exploitation of natural resources. Use of natural resources for economic development is often wasteful and destructive and, in Viet Nam, has taken a significant toll on the environment. For the sustainable development of Viet Nam and the health of its people and ecosystems, it is essential that the environment and the maintenance of environmental services are integrated into future economic development planning.
Environmental Planning
The Environmental planning programme addresses the issue of “greening” the development agenda and mainstreaming the environment into relevant plans and policies. Viet Nam has many healthy and productive environmental resources. Its rivers support humans and ecosystems alike, bringing rich soil to croplands and supporting wetland plants and animals. Products like rattan, honey, fruit, and herbal remedies are sourced from deep forests where the calls of rare birds, monkeys, and wild elephants still can be heard. The East Sea harbors important fisheries and habitats that support fishermen as well as natural ecosystems.
