Viet Nam still needs to make considerable efforts to preserve its aquatic biodiversity, not only by creating more protected areas, but also by improving the management of established systems.

The impact of development activities on water resources and wetlands has not been addressed adequately. Furthermore, emphasis on better understanding of how the livelihoods of local inhabitants are linked to wetland resources is vital for the success of conservation activities. IUCN is supporting the government of Viet Nam and others on a number of projects that focus on such issues.
