IUCN participates in the 7th CMS Vatavaran Environment and Wildlife Film Festival and Forum 2014 in Delhi

On the occasion of 7th CMS Vatavaran Environment and Wildlife Film Festival and Forum, IUCN will host a screening of the film “Hilsa and the Lives in Between” on 01 February 2014. Based on scientific research and policy studies, the film illustrates the issues of depleting stock of Hilsa, livelihood crisis, consumer demands and policy prerogatives. The screening of the documentary film will be followed by a panel discussion that will elaborate on the issues pertaining to the need for cooperation across the national boundaries to conserve the Hilsa.

IUCN’s “Ecosystems for Life: A Bangladesh India Initiative” aims to provide a platform to foster dialogue on issues pertaining to lives and livelihoods in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) region. As a part of this initiative, the film was commissioned on the prized Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) fish which is a cultural symbol as much as an ecological indicator of the GBM region.

Former Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India Ms Meena Gupta, Prof Sugata Hazra, Director, School of Oceanographic Studies, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, Prof Imtiaz Ahmed, International Relations, Dhaka University, Bangladesh and Dr. Niamul Naser, Department of Zoology, Dhaka University, Bangladesh will be in the panel. The discussion session will be moderated by Bharat Bhushan, independent journalist in India.
