Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC)
A separate National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Section was created within the department of Forests in 1972 in order to coordinate the establishment of national parks and wildlife reserves. This office was upgraded to the status of a Department within the Ministry of Forest and Environment in 1980. Other institutions dealing with nature conservation in Nepal are noted as follows: a) the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, which is responsible for implementing forest policies, enforcing forestry laws, and administering forestry resources; b) the Department of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management, which has field activities which are project oriented and support the soil conservation efforts of farmers and other land users through the Integrated Rural Development projects; c) the Department of Forest which includes 75 district forest offices, supporting such activities as forest administration, community forestry, forest management and utilisation, and planning; d) the Department of Forestry and Plant Research, which maintains herbal farms and a botanical garden; e) the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation, which is basically a fund-raising organization.
