The EU Business @ Biodiversity Platform

Continued biodiversity loss will irreversibly compromise the natural resources that societies and businesses depend upon, but often take for granted. Involving business in the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and fair sharing of the benefits has become an important challenge for the business community.

More and more partnerships are being developed between and among businesses, governments and civil society organizations relating to different environmental aspects including biodiversity conservation.

One example is the EU Business @ Biodiversity Platform (B@B) which was launched by the European Commission following up on the Lisbon High-level Conference on Business and Biodiversity held in November 2007 and as a part of the Business and Biodiversity Initiative.

The B@B Platform helps businesses find solutions adjusting their activities to ensure a fair income and sustainable growth, while providing benefits for biodiversity and ecosystems. It engages with companies including SMEs and large companies as well as business associations from the following six sectors Agriculture, Food supply, Forestry, Non-energy extractive industry, Finance and Tourism. Among its main aims are raising awareness of biodiversity conservation and encouraging companies to include biodiversity issues in their operations and environmental management systems.

The B@B Platform cooperates with companies and their respective sectoral associations to benchmark and showcase best practices of biodiversity conservation and promote their implementation. Companies’ performance regarding biodiversity conservation is acknowledged through a biodiversity award. This award is part of the bi-annual European Business Awards for the Environment.

This project is implemented by IUCN Europe, in cooperation with PwC, ECN, European Centre for Nature Conservation and ELO, European Landowners’ Organization.
