French Champions of coral reef protection awarded

For the third year running IFRECOR – the French Coral Reef Initiative – has announced the winners of the Palme IFRECOR awards for actions and policies at the local level that aim to protect, better manage and restore coral reefs and associated ecosystems such as seagrasses and mangroves.
The IUCN French Committee organizes the annual competition and this year the winner in the category of "Protection, enhancement, ecological restoration" was Mr. Ary Chalus, deputy mayor of Baie-Mahault Guadeloupe, for the project "koudmen pour la mangrove”. The winner in the category of education and awareness went to Ms. Fabienne Couapel-Sauret, Vice President Area Meeting for the project known as “Sentier Sous-Marin de L’ermitage a Saint-Paul”.
The awards ceremony was held at the Ministry of Overseas, in the presence of the Deputy Minister responsible for Educational Success, George Pau-Langevin, Minister of Overseas Victorin Lurel , the Director of the French Committee for IUCN, Sébastien Moncorps, and 500 other participants.
The winners are chosen by a jury, chaired by Professor Bernard Salvat (Director Emeritus of the EPHE-Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes). They examined nine projects in total.
