WORKSHOP: Developing a regional monitoring system to influence conservation and development decision making
The aim of this event is to share experiences on the relevance and efficiency of the regional monitoring systems supporting the implementation of policies. This session will explore opportunities to develop policy-oriented monitoring systems in other regions of the world based on the experience of the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory (MWO). Participants will investigate ways to improve the MWO tool and how to develop new partnerships in the Mediterranean context.

Participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to compare and discuss this case study, share similar experiences and assess how the MWO building process, monitoring framework and policy targeted communication can contribute in other areas. The outcomes of this session will strengthen the development of a network of regional monitoring systems.
Lessons from the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory will be presented by different stakeholders including the MWO coordination unit (Tour du Valat), technical partners such as IUCN Mediterranean, IUCN French Committee and Universities as well as decision makers such as the High Commissioner for Water, Forests and Desertification Control of Morocco, and the Ramsar Secretariat.
