Invasive alien species: The biodiversity time bomb is ticking!
Invasive Alien Species (IAS) poses a significant threat to native biodiversity in Europe, as well as to our economy and health. They cause some 12.5 billion Euro worth of damage each year in the European Union alone. On 21 February, BirdLife and IUCN co-hosted an event in the European Parliament in Brussels to shed some light on this ticking time bomb ahead of the EU legislative proposal that is expected in March. Bycatch a problem for the sharks and rays in the Mediterranean and Black sea
A new study has been recently published by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, Elasmobranchs of the Mediterranean and Black Sea: status, ecology and biology. The information compiled by the authors shows that cartilaginous species, including sharks, rays and chimaeras, are by far the most endangered group of marine fish in the Mediterranean Sea. This is in line with the results of the IUCN Red List (2007 regional assessment) that clearly remarks the vulnerability of elasmobranchs and the lack of data on these species. … | Spanish

Powered by Nature: social media student competition for nature-based solutions to energy challenges
Today, IUCN’s Commission on Education and Communication and Alcoa Foundation announced the launch of the Powered by Nature competition in which European communications students are challenged to co-create a social media campaign. The goal of the final campaign is to raise awareness of “natural solutions” for energy and encourage the young generation to become "powered by nature".
