IUCN - Marine Protected Areas workshop in Montenegro

Marine Protected Areas workshop in Montenegro

31 July 2013 | Event

Following the Croatian and Albanian workshops, a third national workshop on Marine Protected Areas took place in Montenegro, on July 26, 2013. It was organized by the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (UNEP/MAP - RAC/SPA), the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN-Med) and the IUCN Environmental Law Centre (IUCN-ELC).

Over 20 representatives from central and local administrations, NGOs and experts gathered to review the findings of the legal and institutional assessment regarding Marine Protected Areas in Montenegro. Participants discussed preliminary documents and proposed modifications for the final version, which is to be published in both Montenegrin and English by the end of 2013. Further versions are expected in the future following changes in marine and coastal legislation related to the EU accession process for Montenegro.

The framework project, “Assessment and support to Adriatic countries’ priority needs for legal, policy and institutional reforms to strengthen the creation processes and the management of marine protected areas”, is conducted under the MedMPAnet Project - Regional Project for the Development of a Mediterranean Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MPAs) Network, through the boosting of MPA Creation and Management. Preliminary data collection was realized within the framework of the NEREUS project, funded by the MAVA Foundation, in collaboration with the Mediterranean wetlands initiative (MedWET).
