The water regime in the oasis and wetland is severely jeopardized by over abstraction of groundwater as a result of important demand for drinking water in Amman as well as of often unsustainable and large-scale irrigation in the immediate surroundings of the oasis. The dialogue is hoped to bring to the foreground different scenarios to tackle the situation. In all cases important policy decisions are required to save guard the oasis.
The Azraq Oasis Dialogue for Restoration is based on the formation of a stakeholders forum. The working network aims at exploring solutions and scenarios for the sustainability of Al Azraq Basin and the long-term use of its ground waters. A large group of government and civil organizations and a group of elected local community representatives are actively participating in this initiative:
- Local elite residents
- Azraq Farmers Water Management Association
- Al Azraq District Administration
- Governorate of Azraq
- The Environment Police
- The Azraq water resort
- IUCN WAME
