The World Conservation Union (IUCN), one of three Sustainability Institutes for the Alcoa Foundation Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Programme, is calling for mid-career conservation and sustainable development practitioners from NGOs to submit proposals for applied research.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) is one of ten Partner organisations taking part in the Alcoa Foundation Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Programme - a five-year long scheme designed to provide qualified mid-career NGO conservation and sustainable development practitioners with a non-degree opportunity to conduct six to twelve months of research with mentoring from IUCN experts.
New round of IUCN practitioner fellowships
IUCN has been collaborating for several years with the Alcoa Foundation to provide Fellowships to mid-career professionals to support their research on issues relevant to the IUCN Programme. The 4th and final Round of “Practitioner Fellows” visited IUCN from 4 to 6 August. They presented their research plans to IUCN staff and learned about the IUCN Programme. Their respective research projects fit in very well with IUCN priorities, though of course each of their research projects is independent. …

The six Fellows nominated in the 3rd Round of the Alcoa Foundation Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship visited Gland for an Orientation Workshop, held 27-30 November 2007. Jeff McNeely, lead mentor, welcomed the Fellows on the first day of the workshop, accompanied by mentors, Joshua Bishop and Gonzalo Oviedo. Pierre Iachetti
After having successfully taken part in the inaugural round of the Alcoa Foundation Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship, Pierre Iachetti has been able to bring together a number of collaborators and funding sources to actually implement the recommendations in his report: "A Decision-Support Framework for Conservation Planning in the Central Interior Ecoregion of British Columbia, Canada". First Round of Alcoa Practioner Fellows reports available

Pierre Iachetti, Kimberly John and Bas Verschuuren have successfully completed their research programmes in IUCN's Conservation and Sustainability Fellowship Program, funded by the Alcoa Foundation. As an Alcoa Foundation Sustainability Institute, IUCN has worked with them over a period of one year, with Jeffrey McNeely, Joshua Bishop and Gonzalo Oviedo acting as their Mentors. IUCN mentors attend a Worldwide Convening Meeting in Brussels

Jeff McNeely, Joshua Bishop and Gonzalo Oviedo all attended the bi-annual Worldwide Convening of Alcoa Academic and Practionner Fellows, Mentors and special guests to discuss issues relating to Conservation and Sustainability. Kimberly John, an IUCN first round Fellow, gave a presentation on her work while Pierre Iachetti, also a first round Fellow, sat on a panel session.

Fellowship programme forges closer IUCN-China links

Tsinghua University, one of the programme Academic Partners, welcomed IUCN mentor Jeff McNeely during his recent travels to the region. Jeff gave several presentations as well as met with key contacts, furthering collaboration between the partner organisations.
Five successful second round fellows announced

Alcoa Foundation and IIE gave official confirmation of IUCN's selection of five fellows for the second round. From China, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Mexico, the chosen group will be researching diverse topics from agribiodiversity of highland barley tosacred natural sites and incentives for watershed management. First gathering of all ten partner organisations in New York

The New York offices of IIE welcomed representatives from all ten partner organisations in the fellowship programme. IUCN, represented by Jeff McNeely and Nadine McCormick, contributed to the evaluation process of the inaugural round of fellows, as well as making networks with the other institutions. The concept for the Convening Meeting, due to be held in November 2006, was also the subject of interactive and lively discussions
