IUCN works on thousands of projects, initiatives and activities around the world.

All of our work is framed by a global programme, developed with and approved by IUCN member organizations every four years.

The IUCN Programme, with clear objectives and areas of activity, is coordinated by IUCN’s Secretariat and delivered in conjunction with IUCN member organizations and Commissions.

In the Secretariat, a small Global Programme Team coordinates the work of individual ecosystem or theme based programmes, with staff based in locations across the globe. Special initiatives coordinate work across these individual programmes on specific issues.

The current IUCN Programme runs from 2005 to 2008. The next, to be presented for approval at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in October 2008, will run from 2009 to 2012.
