Risk governance guidelines for bioenergy policies released

The International Risk Governance Council working group on Bioenergy, chaired by IUCN's Chief Scientist Jeff McNeely, released their Policy Brief "Risk Governance Guidelines for Bioenergy Policies" which examines the opportunities and risks of bioenergy to meet goals such as energy security, rural development and climate change mitigation. It identifies deficits in the current governance of those risks, and presents IRGC’s recommendations for improvements to the risk governance of bioenergy. …

Climate Change

Launching a new partnership for climate change: from Bamako to Barcelona

IUCN is launching a new partnership with the DGCS (Italian cooperation), the Foundation of the Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Foundation Nicolas Hulot, ENDA and the Climate Action Network to facilitate North/South dialogues and to build capacities of developing countries to influence the negotiations on climate change. A series of regional seminars are organized, with one that already successful took place in Bamako, Mali in May 2008, and with other seminars scheduled in Asia and Latin America in 2009, leading to the crucial negotiations in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Biofuels soon to be measured by international standards

The first draft of a global sustainability standard for biofuels has been endorsed by 300 experts and representatives of the public and private sector, including IUCN's Chief Scientist and IUCN Member National Wildlife Federation. Jeff McNeely and Barbara Brambe respectively, are on the Steering Board for the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels, housed at the EPFL Energy Center. …
