Shell and IUCN have been collaborating since 2000 to raise the standard of the company and the industry as a whole on biodiversity performance.
Key milestones in this work include:

  • Shell’s Commitment to biodiversity (August 2003) which recognizes World Heritage Sites as “no go” areas for its oil and gas exploration and development
  • A joint study (October 2006) "Building Biodiversity Business", scoping out the potential for building biodiversity businesses
  • A series of Staff secondments between Shell and IUCN to build biodiversity acumen in Shell and business acumen in IUCN
  • Shell and IUCN collaborated in a joint industry NGO initiative (The Energy and Biodiversity Initiative – http://www.theebi.org (2001-2007) to develop tools and guidelines for integrating biodiversity into oil and gas development.
