Following the planning phase, four sites were selected:
- Licuati/Djabula communities in Maputo Province
- Mahel Community Based Natural Resources Management
- Pilot Forest Concessions in Sofala Province
- Derre/Licuári areas in Zambézia Province.
The four sites share a number of commonalities, including:
- Biodiversity losses and deforestation resulting in a reduced availability of the most valuable forest tree species, medicinal plants, erosion and reduction of soil fertility
- Weakened social and economic infrastructures including limited education and health facilities, lack of potable water, deficient markets, road and communication services
- Low household income and high levels of food insecurity as a result of low input agriculture systems, seasonality of subsistence activities and limited employment opportunities.
- Livelihoods and Landscapes will build on past and present efforts carried out on these sites and will partner with relevant institutions and organizations working in these areas to:
- Promote a better understanding of the poverty-environment linkages through strong social and environmental baselines
- Support resource user groups in income generating activities, community forest concessions, and community business plans for cash and non-cash income for natural resources
- Carry out viability studies for natural resource based enterprises and supporting entry in markets
- Improve forest governance and exploring community–based pilot forest concessions.
