Perverse Incentives and the CBD
The Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has repeatedly underlined the importance to identify and remove or mitigate perverse incentives. This page provides further information on perverse incentives linked to economics, trade, and biodiversity.
The Ecosystem Valuation Site
This site describes how economists value the beneficial ways ecosystems affect people. It is designed for non-economists who need answers to questions about the benefits of ecosystem conservation, preservation or restoration. It provides a clear, non-technical explanation of ecosystem valuation concepts, methods and applications.
Environmental Valuation Reference Library
Environment Canada is developing a database (called EVRI) of economic values for the environment. This database is intended to assist economists and natural resource managers in their attempts to value the environment.
Chambéry Declaration on "Forests & Water"
Participants of the Mountain Forum workshop adopted the present Chambéry Declaration with a view to reinforcing collaborative and supportive mechanisms among all related actors in the sustainable management of forest and water resources, taking into account international initiatives related to forests and water. The Mountain Forum site has a link to an on-line library.
The Watershed Management Council
The Watershed Management Council is a non-profit educational organisation dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of watershed management.
Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol
Under the CDM, projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries and contribute to sustainable development can earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits. Countries with a commitment under the Kyoto Protocol buy CERs to cover a portion of their emission reduction commitments under the Protocol.
The Fund, a public/private initiative administered by the World Bank, aims to deliver cost-effective emission reductions, while promoting biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation. The BioCarbon Fund can consider purchasing carbon from a variety of land use and forestry projects; the portfolio includes Afforestation and Reforestation, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation and is exploring innovative approaches to agricultural carbon.
