Uniting IUCN’s forest members

Forests cover roughly 30% of the earth’s total land area and around 50% of IUCN members work on forest related issues. Data from a survey conducted by the IUCN Forest Conservation Programme revealed that members are interested in networking with other members and sharing their experience in forest issues.

The Members’ Portal, an exclusive platform for IUCN members, now has a new section dedicated for IUCN’s forest members. Organizations that belong to the IUCN network can submit and/or update their data and search for other members working in forests. The information is organized by biogeographic area, nature of work, areas of work, region and geographic level of work.

Working through international networks towards the common goal of forest conservation is important, but one mustn’t forget the benefits for capacity building by involving local and regional networks in developing countries” stated Joanna Boddens Hosang from the Department of International Environment and Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, which is one of IUCN’s member organizations working on forests.

This new section can be accessed at http://members.almlet.net/index.php. If your organization works on forest related issues, you are invited to contribute to this database. Members that submit their data will automatically be entered in a quarterly draw for a copy of one of the FCP’s latest publications.

The Forest Conservation Programme and the Membership Unit would appreciate feedback on our latest effort to bring members working on similar forest issues closer together. Please send your comments or suggestions to: virpi.stucki@iucn.org or tamara.montalvo@iucn.org.
