As a contribution to the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) convened a high-level meeting on biodiversity. Numerous Member States stressed in their Statements the importance of establishing IPBES and welcomed the decision reached in Busan, Republic of Korea, in June 2010.
Attended by Heads of State, Government and delegation, this meeting provided a valuable opportunity to generate awareness at the highest level of the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, namely the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity; and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.
