Australia creates world’s largest network of marine reserves
In November 2012 the Australian Government announced the creation of the world’s largest network of marine reserves. The government proclaimed 44 marine reserves a network, covering 2.3 million square kilometres, a full third of Australia’s ocean territory. The reserves are home to 45 of the world’s 78 whale and dolphin species, six of the seven known species of marine turtle, and 4,000 fish species. The government received support from over 500,000 Australians, who commented positively on the creation of the network. …

IUCN China and UNEP-WCMC host Workshop on Protected Area databases and management
On 27 November, UNEP-WCMC and IUCN China hosted a workshop on protected areas databases in China, “China National Workshop on Protected Areas”. The workshop is part of UNEP-WCMC’s project to strengthen the information base in Asia, held in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), through review by experts. BIOPAMA meeting offers solutions for nature conservation and enhanced livelihoods in Eastern and Southern Africa
Three days of intensive work in South Africa from Dec 4 - 6 have led to breakthroughs for the Biodiversity and Protected Area Management (BIOPAMA) programme. The meeting, convened by the main BIOPAMA partners IUCN and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC), led to the identification of information needs, gaps and products for better decision making on protected areas in Eastern and Southern Africa, as well as priority capacity building needs linked to better decision making. …

Good news from the Caribbean
Nine protected areas in the European overseas territories in the Caribbean have been listed since 2010 under the SPAW (Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife) Protocol of the Cartegena Convention. The SPAW Protocol is the only legally-binding international agreement on biodiversity in the Wider Caribbean, and a key mechanism for strengthening cooperation and increasing consideration of ecological connectivity within the Wider Caribbean. …

Protected areas are featured in many WCC resolutions
Furthering protected areas importance to IUCN and its future conservation efforts, protected areas are the most featured theme in the recently released 2012 World Conservation Congress resolutions and recommendations. Protected areas garnered 18 percent of the 183 resolutions and recommendations, with major initiatives of the Global Protected Areas Programme (GPAP) and WCPA all receiving notice. As GPAP begins implementation of its most recent work programme, its five main umbrella themes – protected areas conserving nature, achieving quality, respecting people, developing capacity and offering solutions – are all represented in the resolutions and recommendations. …
