This year’s annual meeting of IUCN Patrons of Nature, with its theme of ocean conservation, was held recently in Monaco, graciously hosted by HSH Prince Albert II, himself a Patron of IUCN.

Before their meeting began, IUCN’s Patrons took part in the 4th gathering of the Monaco Blue Initiative. This is a gathering of experts convened by HSH Prince Albert II, jointly organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, to discuss global challenges of ocean protection and management. IUCN was involved in organising the event and participated in many sessions.

Several Patrons have a keen passion for the marine world and ocean conservation. Patron Sylvia Earle gave a keynote speech to kick-start the event, providing a startling perspective on the state of health of ‘Planet Ocean’ that she has been exploring for over 50 years. She exhorts the world to ‘seize the moment’. Never before have we had so much information at hand to make the right decisions for the ocean and for our own good.

Patrons Jessica and Adam Sweidan support several ocean conservation projects, including IUCN’s work on high seas governance and coastal restoration. And Patron HSH Prince Albert II is among the key supporters of IUCN’s work on Arctic seas protection and the establishment of marine protected areas.

This second Patrons meeting offered the opportunity to share constructive ideas for action and collaboration, as well as support to IUCN’s mission. IUCN is privileged to count on this growing group of influential individuals.
