IUCN - IUCN and America’s Cup give the Ocean their voices

During the 34th America’s Cup World Series, IUCN is co-hosting the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean project (ACHOP) stand and organizing a set of activities and events with the following objectives:

Communicate messages on ocean health to the public through traditional media activities, as well as social media and on-site engagement;
Encourage development of legacy projects in the areas adjacent to America’s Cup race events;
Create a legacy of Marine Protected Areas

The Ocean's Wealth

Oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, providing over 90% of the Earth’s habitable volume. It is estimated that more than 1 million species live on coral reefs alone, and as many as 10 million in the deep seas
Oceans are home to 80% of the world’s biodiversity: of the 33 different groups of animals 32 occur in the ocean and 21 are exclusive to the ocean. Only a fraction of it has been explored so far and much of ocean life remains a mystery which IUCN experts are striving to unveil
About half of the Earth’s population lives in coastal regions
The Oceans produce over 50% of the oxygen in the atmosphere.

Only 1 out of 3 captured fishes reaches our plates
Ocean acidity increased by 30% since Industrial Revolution
35,000 Maritime transport vessels are releasing 1.12 billion of tons of CO2 per year
Plastic pollution kills thousands of ocean animals each year.
