One of the most direct and negative impacts of Climate Change on coral reefs is coral bleaching. Overfishing is a climate-independent threat but heavily impacts the recovery of reefs from bleaching mortality. For local and national managers to be able to respond to these threats, it is imperative to have monitoring protocols in place to quantify impacts of bleaching, overfishing, and/or recovery of habitats. A number of protocols have been developed by the Marine Research Center, the Darwin Initiative, and the Great Barrier Marine Park Authority to monitor reef fisheries and coral bleaching in the Maldives.
Regional and Atoll Workshops are held at willing and interested resorts to train resort-based marine biologists and dive operators on these protocols.
