Ecosphere, the newest addition to the ESA family of journals, is an online-only, open-access alternative with a scope as broad as the science of ecology itself. The journal publishes submissions from all subdisciplines of ecological science, including theoretical, empirical, and applied ecology.

Open Access Publishing in European Networks (OAPEN) has announced the launch of a beta version of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). This tool enables users to search for peer reviewed books and provides a searchable index to information about books published under an Open Access license and links to the full-text of these materials. The resource currently contains 755 academic peer-reviewed books from 23 publishers, with new documents added regularly. The World Bank has opened its new Open Knoweldge Repository (April 2012). This resource provides online free access to more than 2,100 books and papers produced between 2009 and 2012 as well as all journal articles published in World Bank Research Observer and World Bank Economic Review between 2007 and 2010.
