The IUCN/SSC Plant Conservation Sub-Committee (PCSC) is chaired by Mike Maunder, and consists of botanical experts from around the world representing a wide variety of disciplines and organizations involved in plant conservation.
The PCSC acts as the Steering Committee for the Plants Programme, to ensure that:
1. The programme addresses the highest priorities and is being implemented satisfactorily;
2. The activities in the workplan all have clear, time-specific objectives;
3. Important programme targets are met;
4. The purpose, role and findings are communicated to appropriate audiences; and
5. Funds are secured to implement the programme.
The PCSC goal is that the extinction crisis is acknowledged as a global problem, and the current rate of loss of plant diversity is decreased. Its objectives are to implement its five-year Plant Conservation Strategy. This includes publishing Action Plans, and providing sound and practical advice on plant conservation to IUCN and its commissions, international conventions, governments, and any other organizations requiring information that will promote plant conservation.
The Committee meets annually and is represented on the SSC Steering and Executive Committees.
