Using the work of the IUCN Species Survival Commissions (SSC) Specialist Groups and partner organizations, the IUCN Species Programme provides advice to the Scientific Authorities of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This advice may then be used to develop international or regional conservation policy.

The expertise of the Species Programme is also sought after by nations and regions who seek information to guide their decision-making and natural resource management priorities. To assist in the development of policy the SSC Specialist Groups have produced a number of publications that provide best practice guidelines on topics such as re-introductions and control of invasive species.
