‘The European Green Belt: Borders. Wilderness. Future’ exhibition opened at the Linz Schlossmuseum on the 4th July 2009 as part of Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture. The exhibition was opened by the Landeshauptmann (Head of the Government) of Upper Austria, Mr. Pühringer. Over 400 guests attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition, which will run until the 10th January 2010. The space for the Green Belt exhibition is approximately 1,000 square meters. …

Managing the invasive risk of biofuels – IUCN draft guidelines available for comment

IUCN is working with a number of organisations to develop a set of guidelines on minimising the risk of biological invasions that may result from biofuel developments. The project was launched because of growing concerns that a rush to develop biofuels may open the door to new invasions by introduced species. There is also increasing evidence to suggest that potential future biofuel feedstocks are "high risk" species that pose a serious threat to ecosystems and livelihoods. …

G8 ministers fail to recognise environmental risks of energy options beyond GHG emissions

In the G8 declaration released this week, ministers set a joint target of 80% reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with a large focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies – though potential environmental and social barriers were not considered. While renewable energy technologies hold much promise for delivering energy with reduced greenhouse gas emissions, IUCN advocates for the establishment of legal and regulatory policies that are robust and which safeguard the environment and people as an important part of the enabling framework for renewable energy. …
