Biosphere reserves are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science.
After their designation, biosphere reserves remain under national sovereign jurisdiction, yet they share their experience and ideas nationally, regionally and internationally within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. There are currently 598 sites in 117 countries. In North Africa, there are 15 sites divided between countries as following: Algeria 6, Egypt 2, Morocco 3 and Tunisia 4.
IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Center, in coordination with UNESCO MaB Program Secretariat, has organized in March 2012 in Morocco, a regional workshop on Biosphere reserve governance in the Maghreb. Participations to this workshop, among them various IUCN State and NGO members, invited IUCN Med to continue supporting Biosphere Reserve in North Africa through elaborating a project linking North and South Mediterranean decision makers and BR managers. IUCN Med has undertaken necessary steps in this regards and would like to introduce the new initiative called “Improving capacities and supporting governance for effective management of biosphere reserves in the Mediterranean” in the protected Planet Pavilion the 9th of September from 14:30 to 15:30.
Conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem oasis in North Africa, will be also among the themes to be introduced and discussed. An expert from the Commission on Ecosystem Management of IUCN, will give a short overview on this theme, just after presenting the Biosphere Reserve initiative.
Over the past decade the range of practical tools for assessing Protected Area Management Effectiveness (PAME) has evolved and expanded across the world. This event will showcase recent innovations in PAME tools, focusing on their real-life applications including system-wide assessments, site assessments, communication and reporting tools and analysis. PAME practitioners will be on site to discuss their approaches.The event is an opportunity to network with the global PA community .
