The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), an implementing partner of IUCN Sri Lanka of the Sri Lanka component of the Global Project: Improving Natural Resource Governance for Rural Poverty Reduction, together with IUCN Sri Lanka and and Nilgala Mithuro a leading CBO in the area celebrated the World Environment Day on 5 June 2010 in Nilgala-Bibile, one of the project sites.
The full day event including an exhibition addressed the need for better environmental management, and was held at a school in Bibile, Aluthwela Vidyalaya. Seventeen organizations including IUCN, CEJ, Central Environmental Authority of the Ministry of Environment, NGOs and CBOs in an around the area had exhibition stalls to show their work and sell their products.
The event was attended by the officials of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Forest Department, Local Authorities and the local Police Station. Students from eight schools in the area visited the exhibition together with their parents, relations and friends.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Shamen Vidanage, Programme Coordinator of IUCN Sri Lanka emphasized the importance of protecting the environment highlighting this years theme “Many species, one planet, one future”.
The highlight of the event was the participation of the chief and the members of the Rathugala indigenous community and a performance by them of Kiri Koraha – a traditional dance act - which was a rare performance.
