The International World Water Day is usually held annually on the 22th March, since 1993, to give attention to the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world's water resources.
In addition, a number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used the World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era.
Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. In 2014, the UN System is collectively bringing its attention to the water-energy nexus, particularly addressing inequities, especially for the 'bottom billion' who live in slums and impoverished rural areas and survive without access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, sufficient food and energy services.
It also aim at facilitating the development of policies and crosscutting frameworks that bridge ministries and sectors, leading the way to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy.
IUCN ROWA, through the Water and Climate Change Programme, promotes good water governance in West Asia. It assists countries to strengthen their national capacities to revise existing and/or adopt new legal frameworks for the management of water resources in a sustainable manner and help manage nature resources.
In this relation, the RKNOW network aspires to create a Regional Knowledge Network on Water that will assist in strengthening the application of systematic approaches to water management in five countries (Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Morocco and Egypt).
IUCN ROWA also contributes to the security of water resources supply in the Mediterranean region through SWIM project. It also aims at enhancing and institutionalizing non-conventional water resources in four target countries (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia).
ROWA is also just starting a new initiative called Water DROP that enhances water resources management in the territories at the Mediterranean Basin level.
