The IUCN Council in its first meeting held on January 30, 2013 at Gland, Switzerland has elected Mr. Malik Amin Aslam Khan as the IUCN Vice President. Mr. Amin will be holding this position for the next four years (2013-2016).
It is a matter of immense pride for Pakistan that he has been elected as Vice President. Other Vice-Presidents who were elected are Miguel Pellerano from Argentina, John Robinson from USA, and Marina von Weissenberg from the Finland. The Vice Presidents will assist and advise the IUCN President, Mr. Zhang Xinsheng of China.
After being elected as one of the three Regional Councillors from West Asia, Mr. Malik Amin Aslam Khan became a member of the 33-member IUCN Council. IUCN Council is the principal governing body of IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The Council is responsible for the general control of all affairs of IUCN, subject to the authority of the World Conservation Congress.
Having many years’ experience in political governance and in the field of climate change and development, Malik Amin Aslam is also holding the post of IUCN Regional Councillor for West Asia and the Climate policy advisor for UNDP.
Malik Amin Aslam Khan has served as the Minister of State for Environment (2004-2007) and on the Advisory Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development since 2007.
Previously, Mr. Javed Jabbar had completed two, 4-year terms as the Regional Councillor and IUCN Vice President from Pakistan.
