IUCN Members in Kenya met in Nairobi on Monday this week to discuss the preparations for the IUCN Regional Conservation Forum and the World Conservation Congress. The meeting was attended by representatives from the IUCN membership, IUCN Commissions and the IUCN Secretariat.
In his opening remarks, the IUCN-ESARO Regional Director, Ali Kaka encouraged Members to meet regularly and increasingly involve themselves in the activities of IUCN at national, regional and global levels. He emphasized that it is important for Members and Commission members to reach consensus on programmatic and governance issues so that they are able to speak with one voice during both the Regional Conservation Forum and the World Conservation Congress.
During the meeting, the IUCN-ESARO Head of Constituency Support and Communications, Hastings Chikoko briefed Members and Commission members on the 2012 World Conservation Forum and its preparations. Among other preparatory activities, the meeting was informed of the Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2011.
The meeting was notified that the draft IUCN Programme for 2013 to 2016 will be tabled during the RCF for Members to discuss and endorse prior to further discussion and adoption during the World Conservation Congress.
In their discussions, participants agreed on the importance of ensuring that the IUCN Programme is owned by Members and their role in its implementation is clearly spelt out. The Members emphasized the importance of Members to contribute to the implementation of the IUCN programme. The Members also felt they require more assistance from the Secretariat to hold meetings regularly and to include discussions on the Programme.
The IUCN Secretariat was requested to step up its communication with Members ahead of both the RCF and the Congress to ensure that Members understand their roles and responsibilities as well as the benefits of being associated with a global conservation network such as IUCN.
The IUCN Members have agreed to hold more meetings in the coming two months to agree on the issues to take to the Johannesburg RCF in September 2011.
