IUCN extends a warm welcome to the new National Committee for Cameroon, which was officially recognized by Council at its 74th Meeting.
The Committee was created at a meeting in Yaoundé from 2-3 March 2010, attended by all active Members of IUCN in Cameroon and a number of potential Members. At its meeting in Gland, from 2-4 June 2010, the IUCN Council officially recognized the National Committee for Cameroon and encouraged the further creation of National and Regional Committees. IUCN now counts 50 National Committees and 7 Regional Committees that have been officially recognized.
The Executive Bureau of the National Committee of Cameroon is to date composed of representatives from the Cameroon Environmental Watch (CEW), the Centre for Environmental Studies and Development in Cameroon (CEDC), and the Organization for the Environment and Sustainable Development (OPED), and the Committee is chaired by Professor Roger Ngoufo, Director General of Cameroon Environmental Watch. Elections will be held every three years.
The Committee aims to facilitate cooperation between IUCN Members in Cameroon, develop strategies to increase the membership, capitalize on the expertise and experience of its Members, support capacity-building for Members’ and develop initiatives and common projects to achieve the strategic objectives of IUCN.
Membership of the National Committee is open to all IUCN Members in Cameroon. There are currently 7 active Members in Cameroon: representing the State, the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection (MINEP), the International Association for the Protection of the Environment in Africa (ENVIRO-PROTECT), Cameroon Environmental Watch (CEW), the Centre for Environmental Studies and Development in Cameroon (CEDC), the School for the Training of Wildlife Specialists of Garoua (EFG), the Group of Friends of UNESCO and the Environment (GRAMUE) and the Organization for the Environment and Sustainable Development (OPED).

According to the IUCN Statues and Regulations, IUCN National and Regional Committees “shall work in partnership with the Secretariat and the Commissions to formulate, coordinate and implement the Programme of IUCN within their State or Region”. [Part VII, Article 71 (c)]
