CEC member Alan AtKisson is engaged in creating this new United Nations training and research facility for sustainable development.
The opening of the UN Office for Sustainable Development was, from a CEC perspective, the clear highlight of my year in 2011. The new "UNOSD" is still in formation, so although it is officially launched now, don't go looking for the website just yet. (The launch was a formal kick-off, but there is a lot of work still to do.) By early next year, this new global center for sustainable development knowledge, research, and capacity building, directed especially at the needs of developing countries, will be up and running.
I worked as a consultant to UNDESA to develop the initial strategy and work plan, and worked closely with the UN and Korean government officials who are responsible for getting it up and running. To additionally support this process I also recruited Nils Ferrand, a senior researcher at the French institute Cemagref, who developed the knowledge management strategy.

It was a pleasure to work with this very dedicated and hard-working team in 2011, and I look forward to seeing the Office come alive in 2012. I am sure that many CEC members have much to contribute, and potentially much to gain, from its new presence in our global community of sustainability learning and expertise.
