The Earth is blessed with energy in abundance. In thousands of years, humans have discovered many different ways to harvest the energy provided by nature. We learned to use the power of the wind, the heat of the sun, the waves of the ocean. We learned to burn ancient plant matter, and we learned about the consequences of doing so. It’s time to explore new ways to address energy challenges, get people involved across borders and work together to build awareness and effect change.
IUCN’s Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) and Alcoa Foundation have launched the ‘Powered by Nature’ competition in which European communications students are challenged to co-create a social media campaign. The goal of the final campaign is to raise awareness of “natural solutions” for energy and encourage the young generation to become "powered by nature".
Our societies are more and more dependent on energy and at the same time the type and amount of energy we use impacts the world ecology. The unsustainable use of energy sources combined with low energy efficiency places increasing pressures on ecosystems and people.
Young people can be change agents and new communications technologies and social media can help them promote a more sustainable world.
Communications students from eleven European countries are invited to submit their ideas for innovative communications campaigns that encourage other young people to use more sustainable behaviours. A jury composed of international leaders in the field of nature conservation, energy, industry and advertising, will pick the best idea from each country. All national award winners will be invited to a weeklong collaborative creativity challenge workshop in the Netherlands in August.
The experts of the IUCN CEC will identify potential candidates for the award from a selected number of European countries. Eligible countries are Belgium, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy and Norway. The winners of the award will have the opportunity to develop a European campaign with support from experienced IUCN CEC communicators.
