Simon Stuart is the Chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission.

He has undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Cambridge, with fieldwork experience in Tanzania and Cameroon.

Simon started work on the African Bird Red Data Book in 1983 and joined the IUCN Secretariat in 1986. Before becoming Chair of the SSC in 2008,  he was Head of IUCN's Species Programme, Acting Director General, Head of the Biodiversity Assessment Unit, and Senior Species Scientist. He has coordinated IUCN/SSC biodiversity assessments, including those on mammals, reptiles, amphibians and marine species.
