Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10)

During the COP10, government representatives considered the establishment of IPBES, its implications and possible synergies with the CBD. Delegates' final decision encouraged the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly to consider the establishment of IPBES at the earliest opportunity, emphasized the need for IPBES to strengthen the work of the CBD SBSTTA and requested the CBD Secretariat to determine how CBD can make use of IPBES once established.

Discussions was supported by the document UNEP/CBD/COP/10/12 prepared by the CBD Executive Secretary.

On 21 October 2010, during the COP10,a side event on IPBES (programme) was also hosted by the Ministry of Environment of Japan, DIVERSITAS, IHDP, ICSU and IUCN. This event provideed an update on the IPBES decisions, the next steps in the IPBES process, and considered some of the possible implications of IPBES for the scientific and policy communities addressing biodiversity and ecosystem services – in the context of the CBD and beyond.
