Hilary Benn’s Trip to Huayuan Village

Hilary Benn, UK’s Secretary of State for the Environment, visited LLS field site of Huayuan Village.
On November 12, 2008, a delegation from United Kingdom headed by Mr. Hilary Benn, UK’s Secretary of State for the Environment, visited IUCN’s Livelihoods and Landscapes Initiative’s China field site of Huayuan Village, a part of Miyun Watershed. The health of the watershed is imperative to the sustainability of the Beijing water supply as the reservoir supplies the majority of the water to 17 million of the city’s residents. In an effort to improve Miyun Watershed’s capacity and with assistance from IUCN China and its partner Beijing Forestry Society, Huayuan Village is trying to adopt innovative Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) strategies. These include applying close-to-nature forest management scheme, improving the efficiency of local fuel wood use, facilitating local community’s participation in forest management, and improving the community’s livelihood.
This was Mr. Benn’s first visit to Huayuan village. He and the other delegates hiked part of the mountainous landscape surrounding the village. They witnessed first-handedly FLR management principles in action, and how local livelihoods and ecosystem services can benefit as a result.
Representing IUCN were Kent Jingfors, the Regional Programme Coordinator of Asia, Zhuang Hao, IUCN China’s Programme Coordinator, and Li Jia, IUCN China’s Forest Programme Officer. After briefly LLS’s mission in Huayuan village, Mr. Jingfors emphasized to the visitors the importance of UK Forest Commission’s support through the UK-China Sustainable Development Dialogue, which enabled IUCN to engage with governments in Global Partnership of Forest Landscape Restoration (GPFLR) and the vital role China plays in FLR. The visit finished with a visit to local villagers houses, during which visitors from UK got to see how lives are like in typical Northern China households.
