Water and Climate Coalition at COP-16, Cancun

The Water and Climate Coalition is a multi-stakeholder coalition of partners seeking to place water resources management at the heart of climate change policy.
IUCN is part of the Water and Climate coalition which operates at a global and intergovernmental level in UN-related processes to integrate water and climate policy. It specifically works to engage with the negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Currently, the Coalition will be involved in a number of activities and events in Cancun for COP16.
-Coalition session as part of CONAGUA Dialogues on Water and Climate Change. This session, hosted by the Water and Climate Coalition, will make concrete proposals on how the issues raised and addressed in the CONAGUA Water and Climate Dialogues can be translated into political commitments under the UNFCCC.

-The Dialogues for water and climate change, held by a series of partners led by CONAGUA, will take place Wednesday 1st - Wednesday 8th December. The Dialogues will aim to shed new light on the importance of water management for climate change adaptation. A full program is available here.
-PRESS CONFERENCE: Putting Water Security First
The Coalition will host a press conference to communicate its key message to a wider media audience.

-SIDE EVENT: Water, Climate and Development: Linking Up Development Agendas and Putting Water Security First
This side event is being hosted by the Water and Climate Coalition, the Global Water Partnership and the Heinrich Boell Foundation. It will demonstrate links between water, human development and climate change, discuss policy responses for COP 16, and explore financing water-related adaptation.

The coaltion has also produced a number of new publications to coincide with the COP16 Negotiations in Cancun.
1) The Coalition is proposing the establishment of a work programme on water and climate under the UNFCCC. It has produced a comprehensive Discussion Paper outlining the possible scope and functions of such a programme. To read the paper please click here.
