IUCN comments on the way IPBES is being shaped
10 January 2012 | News story
UNEP, acting as the interim Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), has published all comments received from governments and other stakeholders on the draft elements of the IPBES work programme, the rules of procedure of the plenary and related IPBES procedures. The comments also include contributions from the IUCN network.
IUCN noted that interested parties are increasingly supporting a rapid establishment of IPBES and are eager to endorse it with a robust and effective work programme. Several concrete proposals were made to prioritize activities to be implemented in the first years.
IUCN also recognized the consensus to address the role of observers in the Plenary properly and timely. Additional thinking and lobbying is still necessary to safeguard a constructive place for civil society organizations in IPBES.
The full text of all comments received from governments and other stakeholders, including IUCN, can be accessed on the official IPBES website.
For the summary of all comments received, please see an article on the IISD Biodiversity Policy & Practice knowledgebase.
The comments will be incorporated into preparations for the Second Plenary Session to build IPBES scheduled to take place from 16 - 21 April 2012, in Panama.
