EU State of Nature Report points to continued loss of biodiversity, but success of Natura 2000

The State of Nature in the EU report, released by the European Environment Agency, shows that few species and habitats have a favourable conservation status in the EU and that progress towards the 2020 biodiversity strategy targets has not been substantial since the last assessment. Nevertheless, it also demonstrates that species and habitats with favourable status trends have benefited greatly from protection through the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, which now covers 18% of the EU’s land and 4% of marine waters. …

The paper, “The Importance and Benefits of Species”, released today in the journal Current Biology, advocates a conservation philosophy that all species are important, no matter their direct use by humans, apparent value, intelligence or attractiveness. The default setting for our relationship to all species on Earth should be “Conservation”, not trying to develop arguments for why a species should be saved through its current perceived usefulness to humans. …

Europe’s medicinal plants in decline, 2 percent threatened with extinction – IUCN report

The IUCN European Red List of Medicinal Plants provides, for the first time, information on the status of all major medicinal plants native to Europe. This assessment includes 400 vascular plants, including trees, aquatic plants and epiphytes, which occupy a wide range of habitats. These plants include common and widely-used species such as Arnica (Arnica montana), St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and Common Heather (Calluna vulgaris). …

Du 6 au 8 mai 2015, s'est tenu à Cotonou au Bénin, l'atelier régional de partage d’expériences sur les approches de gestion intégrée des écosystèmes. Il a été organisé par l’UICN-PACO en collaboration du Ministère de l’Environnement, Chargé de la Gestion des Changements Climatiques, du Reboisement et de la Protection des Ressources Naturelles et Forestières du Bénin, de la CEDEAO et de l’UEMOA, dans le cadre du Partenariat pour la Gouvernance Environnementale en Afrique de l’Ouest (PAGE). Cet atelier a permis aux participants de s’approprier le concept et les enjeux de l’approche de gestion intégrée des écosystèmes et de partager les expériences d’application en cours dans les pays. …

La UICN recomienda actuar en favor del Patrimonio Mundial natural en peligro

La UICN, Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, publica hoy, con anterioridad a la reunión del Comité del Patrimonio Mundial que tendrá lugar el 28 de junio al 8 de julio en Bonn (Alemania), una serie de recomendaciones clave sobre sitios naturales del Patrimonio Mundial nuevos y amenazados. La UICN recomienda retirar Los Katios de Colombia de la Lista en Peligro. También recomienda inscribir un nuevo sitio de Jamaica e incorporar extensiones considerables en dos sitios inscritos de Viet Nam y Sudáfrica. Gabon supports the development of BIOPAMA tools

The BIOPAMA Observatory for Protected Areas and Biodiversity in West and Central Africa has finalized testing the tools for protected area data collection and will start soon their dissemination and use in the region, with the support of regional and national actors. The Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux de Gabon (ANPN - National Parks Agency) and the Réseau des Aires Protegées d’Afrique Centrale (RAPAC – Central Africa Protected Areas Network) have been crucial partners for BIOPAMA in this process designed to support decision making through the collection, management, and analysis of protected areas data. …
