Capacity building: IUCN staff  improve writing skills

07 October 2007 | News story

A training course on writing skills was held for IUCN staff this September under the guidance of a regional trainer in the field of communication for development.

The two-day writeshop focused on encouraging an innovative perspective on writing, which is oriented to effective communication, as well as building practical skills in a variety of writing styles as was requested by the participants.

Conducted in a participatory and lively manner, the writeshop provided an excellent opportunity for IUCN staff to strengthen their writing and communication skills; to learn more about each other; have fun together; and discuss potential solutions to relevant common work challenges.

A series of team exercises that outlined the mental model of writing, the mind map method, together with specific sessions on how to incorporate creativity into the writing process, how to write proposals and news stories, the reason why and how to use plain English, have exposed IUCN staff to a variety of effective communication tools.

IUCN highly values staff capacity building. More training courses will be tailored to meet the needs of IUCN staff in the future, of which the most upcoming is the photography training course in this November.
